I had a good reminder of this recently during a 45 minute conversation at our local Barnes & Noble with Phil Weber, the assistant coach for the successful Phoenix Suns basketball team. His positive attitude and stories about motivating the Sun’s team members blew me away. His warmth and generosity to spend almost 45 minutes with me showed me this man was genuine,and that he knew quite a bit about goal setting. With summer quickly approaching, I casually remarked to my wife that it would be great if we had a wooden outdoor table to put on the back porch. That way, instead of spending the day indoors working on my notebook while Destructo, our three year-old, rips my bedroom office apart (”you just keep working Daddy … I’m playing!”), I could sit out the back with my notebook enjoying the fresh air and sunshine, supervising our young son. I pointed out to Corporate Babe that we could also sit outside and have breakfast together on weekends, and she agreed that it would be a terrific idea.

Anyway, last Sunday we were on our way back home from a family excursion, when Corporate Babe suddenly stopped the car outside a house, a few blocks away from our home. “What’s the matter?” I asked her. She told me she had just spotted a yard sale and maybe we could find a wooden outdoor table there. “No way!” I snapped. “Let’s just get home! Besides, I don’t want to pay for a table. I’m sure we can find one for free.”

One of the challenging issues to survive in, as a single parent , is an overwhelming emotion that you should complete the role of both parents. This feeling evolves and will be more intense if the other single parent is not portraying a role that is active with the children of the family.

You would probably fight this feeling often in two ways.
