In the 79 Mexican spill (which was, to date, worse), a hurricane dispersed the oil from the Texas coast and mother nature had the oil broken down in a few years. Shrimp were hard hit a first but then had a baby boom. Some larger creatures took a decade or more to return to pre-spill numbers. The combination of evaporation, sunlight, and bacteria breaks the oil down to harmless substances quite quickly.
Only a couple of days.
Never in our lifetime will it be cleaned up sucessfully. The oil is once again gushing out because the cap has been taken off the well. They claim a robot "bumped" it.If this is really a volcano under the ocean,we have no clue when it will stop gushing or if we can even come up with anything to stop it.The effects of this spill will be felt all over before long.
The first thing I thought of when I read your question was..I doubt most People know how white the sand is on Alabama (Gulf Shores)and(Destin,San Destin,Pensacola) Florida Beach’s. It’s as white as Sugar, only bigger grains, and it’s clean…What a shame
decades..
it is a HUGE shame….Florida’s beaches are beautiful…but not only that
all of the fish that are dying….and dolphins and sharks and other animals that are loosing food (fish) and will likely die….the entire ecosystem in our oceans before you know it will vanish
The " cataclysmic incident " is an ongoing event and until some real containment is effected or the well is exhausted a real estimate for clean up time cannot be made. The gulf is not the only part of the sea being affected though ( crude is permeating well out into the ocean and currents can take it worldwide eventually ).
It might have been better if the POTUS had asked Congress and the Senate to grant an allowance for the Dutch sea sweeping equipment to be used , and he still can, but time has been wasted on that too. Don’t get me wrong, I do not blame Obama for the spill, just quicker action on his part may have alleviated some of the problem.
maybe 100 years or more
