Free Free Blood Sugar Meter Diabetes Tests

A blood glucose meter is a useful device for diagnosed diabetics to use at home. All diabetics should have regular blood sugar tests. In some cases these can save lives. Some non-diabetics like to be tested too as a preventative measure, especially in view of modern trends toward overeating and obesity. The best way to test for type 2 diabetes, the type that tends to develop later in life which is avoidable, is to undergo what is called a fasting plasma glucose test. This kind of diabetes testing needs a blood sample to be taken in order to test the blood sugar levels. This diabetes test would of course usually be administered by a qualified nurse or doctor. Patients need to go without eating or drinking for a period of time before the test so that their blood glucose levels are not affected by anything they might have recently eaten or drunk. This test is a useful guide but it is not 100% reliable as it only measures the blood glucose levels at the moment of the test. A hemoglobin A1c test is generally even more accurate because it measures the levels of sugar in the blood over a longer period of time.

Another kind of test is the oral glucose tolerance test. This is more straightforward and does not require a blood sample. For this test the patient also must fast for a certain length of time before having the blood sugars tested. After the first reading is taken, the patient consumes a high glucose drink and then is tested again to check how their system has coped with the high intake of glucose. Although sometimes more detailed tests may be required, often this test using a blood glucose meter can help the medical professional to make an initial diagnosis of diabetes or pre-diabetes or reassure the patient that no diabetes is present.
