1. Use Positive Rather Than Negative Means
It is not difficult to find that parents tend to focus their energy on scolding their children on the wrongs committed but not on praising on the rights done. What parents do not realise is that the child’s good behaviors are not being enforced!
Parenting does not only involve correctly your children’s bad behaviors, it is just as important to be on the look out for their good behaviors so as to praise and enforce the good behaviors too. It is an indication to your children that you know and appreciate what they are doing.
Being the mother of twin toddlers, I have to very observant when they are with me. When I catch my boy pushing or hitting his twin sister, I will not hesitate to stop him immediately and correct his misbehavior. However, I also ensure that I shower him with praises and comment on his good behaviors too when I catch sight of him doing things like sharing his food or toys with his sister. Through positive encouragement, my children learns to correct the bad behaviors and do more of what is right instead.
2. Allocate Personal Time For Each Child
If you want to be a successful parent, the first thing you need to do is to build strong bonds with your children and the most effective way to do so is through spending time with them individually. You can set aside 30 minutes each day or at least 2 hours each week for a personal time. This is the period when you can talk to your kids about their day but make sure you do not get interrupted by phone calls or any other forms of distractions.
If your kids are still very young, you can have family time together when both parents get to play, sing and talk to your kids. Alternatively, you can choose to spend the time by reading a story to them before bedtime. You must always remember to show your children that you love them by giving them lots of hugs and kisses.
3. Spare The Rod And Nurture The Child
Using the corporal punishment on the child to force him or her to obey is a thing of the past. It has been found in various studies that children who have lived under such bitter and harsh environment will end up becoming aggressive and beyong control when they enter adulthood. Rather than using the rod to force your child into obedience, a much better and proven to be more effective child parenting model is via reasoning and love. One example is to remove a privilege or get your child to clear the mess when a rule is broken.
