Most parents do not realize how big an effect this decision has on their child’s future schooling. There is little proven research to help make an informed decision.

The times tables are one of the basics that absolutely have to be learned well to provide a sound basis for future maths progress. If times tables are not learned well your children’s progress in school will suffer. Not only will lack of progress in this area affect school progress but it can also have an affect on a child’s confidence.

Lets go back to the beginning and ask what should the aim of learning times tables, given this fundamental nature of times tables? The goal needs to be to learn the times tables in such a way that children can recall them instantly.

Why? Because the tables are basics of maths. Times tables leads to division, long addition and subtraction, before building up to factorisation, algebra and a whole host of other maths, methods and concepts. The simple and important thing is this; if your children use methods to learn times tables that do not enable them to know them instantly they will waste time trying to remember or calculating rather than being able to move on easily to the next maths subject.

It is important to appreciate this. To do this, try answering these quick questions – What is your name?

Did you even have to think about the answer to this question? How about the question; what is your name and what is your partner or spouse’s name.

I am sure you answered just as quickly. Now try this – What is 8 x 7? What about adding to this? What is 7 x 8 and 9 x7? Did you know these tables as well as you know your name? 8 x 7 was changed to 7 x 8. Most people pause before answering. Most people have to do a different calculation instead of the same one.

Your children need to know their tables as well as they know their own names. When children can do this then building to a higher level of mathematics becomes much easier for them. Your children need to learn times tables for instant recall.
