Teach A Dog To Fetch

Most dog owners feel that dog training is a time consuming and cumbersome process. However, this couldn’t be further away from the truth; as a matter of fact dog training can serve as a bonding time with your pet. You can easily teach your pet certain basic commands like come, sit, stand and stop. One of the easiest ways is mentioned below. Lets starts with the “come” command. You can teach your dog to follow this command even if you don’t have too much time on your hands and without too much effort. The technique used here is positive reinforcement and it is a very simple and easy technique for training your dog. Positive reinforcement means rewarding your dog when he does something that he is commanded to do. Since this technique involves using small treats as training aids, it will be helpful if you use it before your dog has had his meals. For treats you can use kibbles or anything else that your dog is fond of.

1. The first thing that you will have to do is position yourself in such a way that your dog can hear your command and see the treat in your hand. The treat should be held in between your thumb and index finger. You don’t have to extend your hand out, instead rest it on your lap.

2. Next you will have to lure your dog with a happy command and a smile on your face. You want your dog to be excited about this little game that he thinks you are playing with him. So use a tone that conveys fun and excitement. Once you have your body language and the tone of your voice down, say “Sparky come”. Make sure that the entire training environment is fun filled and exciting. Your dog will have surely noticed the treat by now.

3. Now most dogs will have a standard reaction to a friendly tone and a treat; they will come running to you. But if your puppy just sits there looking at you, he may need a little motivation to come towards you and the food. To make him feel that you mean business, squat on the floor and put forth your hand with the treat held as it is. Now call out to him again, this should certainly get his attention.

4. Your puppy will most probably run up to you and stand in front. So this is the prefect time to teach him to sit. Start by caressing his neck and upper body then with one hand apply pressure on his hind to make him sit. While you do this, move the treat to his mouth. Once your dog has obeyed you, pet him and praise him. You want him to remember this experience and start associating it with the “come “command. 5. Once you have practiced this command with your dog a couple of times, you can stop using the treat and just use your voice to command him to come to you. Even if you are not using the treat don’t forget to praise him because this will be a bigger incentive for him than the treat.
