The Boss And You: Things To Remember

I don’t think there’s any person who isn’t at least a bit scared of their boss. I think the feeling comes from the mutual respect you have for the person, considering that he has the power to make or break your profession. If you’re suddenly caught in a situation where you actually have to sit and dine with your superior, you need to know the right tips to keep your cool and look composedthroughout. You can get points and credits by being proper.

1. Appear professional. This is the time I usually dress to impress, even if I’m eating with a person of the same sex. Try to put on something proper and orderly, but avoid very attractive wear that tend to make your boss look underdressed. I suggest knowing exactly where you’re supposed to have lunch or dinner then wearing the appropriate attire. If you’re going out for lunch on a work day, you can just wear whatever you have. If changing for dinner, you may just replace your tie or shirt, but use the same coat.

Make subtle statements that you are very professional and competitive, such as flashing your Personalized business card holder or always having a pen and organizer prepared. Carry yourself well by standing straight, practicing dining etiquette and smiling as necessary.

2. Communicate. I think dinner with your boss is almost like having a dinner date with a girl you met for the first time. I’m saying that you need to know how to listen. Your boss always has something to tell you for gatheringslike these so keep your ears open and embrace sage advice. Listen, then respond. If your boss asks you something, that’s the time you give an opinion. I recommend not being completely honest that might give the impression that you do not like your job, but giving a straight answer.

Conversations do not need to revolve around work only. You can talk about anything such as the last movie you watched, family, Engraved flasks, etc. If you’re dining for social reasons, you can relax a bit but be careful about jokes and being too abrasive. Just try to feel what your boss is suggesting for the topic, then follow through.

3. No bribes. Remember that your boss may be having dinner with you to assess your attitude, competence or just to get to know you better. Avoid giving gifts or any material item that might present you as sucking up to him. The best thing you can presentis a compliment.
Maintain a professional tone throughout the evening, even if your boss may loosen up a little from a few drinks. Avoid some bad behaviorlike keeping on checking your Engraved pocket watches or going back and forth to the men’s room. Always appear like you’re interested and call it a night when your boss does. When you get back to work, do not seem like you’re the favorite and keep that professional attitude always. Your boss will appreciate you more for your efforts and tact.
