City Break In Vienna
The city of Vienna is the midpoint of Austria, because it offers you everything that your heart desires. Furthermore, the sights are all easily accessible by public transport or by foot. Perfect for a sightseeing- weekend in summer.
There are several sights in Vienna which should be visited. One of these popular sights is the Schoenbrunn Castle, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It consists of a large garden, which is made for extensive and relaxing walks. The castle belonged to the Habsburgs, a dynasty which reigned for over six centuries in Austria and is well- known all over the world. And what would be Vienna without Sissi, who was the Empress consort of Austria and also Queen consort of Hungary due to her marriage to Emperor Franz Joseph.
Another distinctive feature is the Stephansdom, a Metropolitan Church, which is centrally located in the Stephansplatz and it is one of the tallest buildings of the city. Its current Romanesque and Gothic form seen today stands on the ruins of two earlier churches, the first being a parish church consecrated in 1147. As the most important religious building in Austria’s capital, the cathedral has born witness to many important events in that nation’s history and has become one of the city’s most recognizable symbols.
The Ferris wheel in the Prater with over 250 other attractions are a must for everyone who visits Vienna. From the Ferris wheel you can enjoy a amazing view over the city.
This is an ideal tourist destination for the whole family and promises a lot of fun. Particularly for children, the Prater has a lot to offer like Ringel- games, Punch and Judy shows and an Old-Vienna train in a cave. Otherwise, there are traditional games like ball-throwing and shooting, automate- casinos, a ghost train and flight- simulator. It is supplemented by nice cafes and restaurants which are mostly located in the big park and maybe also near your Vienna apartment.
The “Hundertwasser- Haus”, built by Friedensreich Hundertwasser in1985, is one of the few houses of the famous artist. It was developed as a normal residence and today contributes to the beautiful cityscape of Vienna. It features undulating floors, a roof covered with earth and grass, and large trees growing from inside the rooms, with limbs extending from windows. Hundertwasser took no payment for the design of the house, declaring that it was worth it, to prevent something ugly from going up in its place.
Concerning museums, Vienna plays a big role among the very large cities. More than 300 museums can be explored. The Museum of Fine Arts, which is one of the ten most important art collections in the world, boasts names like Dürer, Rubens, Titian, Velazquez, and the world’s largest collection of Bruegel. Worth seeing is also the Coin, the Egyptian and Oriental antiquities collection.
In the Museums Quartier (the Art and Natural History Museum are nearby), the focus is on the 20th and 21 Century, including institutions like the Leopold Museum and the Museum of Modern Art.
If you come to Vienna I recommend renting an apartment in Vienna near to the main sights, so that you can enjoy Vienna all day long.
