Vacations In The Scottish Outer Hebrides

The Hebrides are a small group of islands situated not too far off the Scottish north west coast. The isles of the Inner and Outer Hebrides have been lived on since the Mesolithic period and throughout history the language and culture has been greatly influenced by various races and today the culture of the Hebrides is a blend of Scottish, English, Celtic and Norse influences. In general most people speak in the Gaelic language and though some speak English, it is commonly their second language. At one time vacations in the Western Isles/Outer Hebrides were only for the adventurous and rich and those people who could afford plenty of time. Today it is much, much to travel to the Western Isles/Outer Hebrides, you can get there by car and ferry or take a direct flight to a choice of destinations on the islands. Regrettably it is not possible to get all of the way by rail although you can travel by train to the coast and then catch a coach for the remainder of the trip. Often the only hiccup that can arise is sorting out accommodation especially if you are searching for Harris accommodation for groups which is often booked up a year in advance.

One of the primary reasons people visit the Hebrides is that the the culture and landscape of the islands are stunningly unique. Dotted all along the south west coast of the Isle of Harris are to be found some of the most beautiful beaches of golden sand in all of Scotland, and many people believe the U.K. Every once in a while you will find a standing stone on Harris but it is on the adjoining Isle of Lewis that you will find the most awe inspiring standing stones at Callanish not far away from Stornoway the principal town in the Outer Hebrides/Western Isles. The Callanish stone circle is said to be second to only Stonehenge in England.

Deciding which island to stay on, the Isle of Lewis or Isle of Harris is a truly difficult decision and more people are deciding to spend a little time on each. Lewis bed and breakfast is often easier to book than Isle of Harris accommodation, book early to avoid problems.

Bed and breakfast in Stornoway is far less of a problem to find but again to be certain ensure you book early. Nearly all accommodation in the Hebrides is of good quality and the hospitality is unbeatable and the local folk friendly and helpful.

Besides the Isles of Lewis and Harris there are a few other isles that are very easy to visit. The most popular are North and South Uist, Eriskay and Barra and there is a ferry which runs from the Isle of Harris to North Uist at Leverburgh, a small village on South Harris.
