Hertha of Berlin
15 years ago, the heart of Berlin, was separated by masses of GDR patrols that monitored the wall. After its fall in 1989, this area of 39m ² has become the most likely site of any European capital.
Currently, the district of Mitte (center) is still being refurbished and the vast array of the most expensive stores, headquarters of multinational companies with the most active Underground system make it an incredible place with its originality and uniqueness.
But lets take it one step at a time and start at the beginning …
After World War II Berlin was, as we know, divided into two parts. The leaders of the GDR destroyed houses and roads, to create a huge wall of 152Km cutting the capital from North to South. It was known by Berliners as the “line of death”
Today this stretch has been replaced by modern buildings with the plan to reconvert this area back into the city centre.
The well known and popular district of Mitte is 40km² and is located between Alexander Platz (East) and the Brandenburg Gate (West). There are still many non-residential areas that have been used for recycling, but believe me when I say that this is the most dynamic face of the German capital.
What makes it really special is the famous merger between the “cool” of Mitte and the “Underground”. This latter is inhabited by artists, electronic music clubs, shops and art decor.
The reason for this curious combination is as follows; after the fall of the Berlin Wall, young Berliners rushed to make an impact in the new area, making any available space their home. Residents of this area have often tried to be evicted but they always cope with the pressure and are well supported by donations from visitors and partnerships.
People state that events of such overwhelming magnitude leave an indelible footprint on the place where they occurred. Mitte is no exception, for on every street corner you can feel the dramatic events of the past and the suffering of all those people.
